Will Reading Return?

Due to the global recession, most forms of media fell in 2009. In this article we are going to discuss book sales. According to a recent report, book sales were off by 1.8 percent in 2009. This is a slight improvement from the 2.6 percent drop in 2008.

Years ago, books were considered recession-proof, since they were an affordable form of entertainment. But that is not the case anymore. Of course, this has more to do with the competition than it does with the actual cost of books, which is not much more than it has ever been, when adjusted for inflation in San Pedro.

However, there are other forms of entertainment that are comparably cheap, often free. We are speaking of course about the internet. As you may know, people can download games, movies and music online for a nominal fee. By comparison, books are quite expensive. Fortunately, there is good news to report.

Electronic readers are what you might consider a hybrid technology. They give people the ability to download the latest titles directly from the internet. These devices are superior to traditional books in many ways, including cost, convenience and storage capacity.

As you might expect, readers are a bit ambivalent when it comes to electronic readers. They know, of course, that the devices are a step forward, but they also fear that they will soon replace traditional books. Still, that hasn't stopped them from purchasing twenty million electronic readers over the past three years.
