Unique Inheritance Ideas

If you have ever received a family heirloom, you must have experienced a special feeling and recalled cherished memories. The tradition of a family heirloom must be started by somebody; after all, it cannot start itself. Creating heirlooms can enrich the feeling of belonging in a family and makes for great memories!

An heirloom does not have to be a yellowing and decrepit item. It does not even have to be something exorbitant and expensive. A perfect heirloom would be something that has emotional value. It could be a book that you cherish and you want your children and their children to read, or it could be an expensive diamond trinket. They are both equally great ideas!

Many people like creating a family ornament that will be passed from generation to generation. What could make Christmas more special than having the family ornaments seen here adorn the tree, a reminder of our loved ones watching over us? (more...)

Reading the Old Fashioned Way

There is so much character in an aged book that has passed down from generation to generation. In spite of all the technological gizmos and digitization of information, books firmly preserve their important place in the world of knowledge.

Some things in life have a certain charm and character. Be it an old jewelery box, a memorable Christmas ornament, or a favorite book owned by grandfather. Special memories of the holiday are created here , or you can enjoy scrapbooking, a wonderful resource for family memories. Certain things are perfect to pass on as heirlooms.

The very nature of book reading as an activity is solitary and provides the perfect setting for quiet reflection; something that is rapidly disappearing from our lives. With ubiquitous entertainment options, our attention spans reduce and we are no longer as accustomed to quiet entertainment as our predecessors. (more...)

Will Reading Return?

Due to the global recession, most forms of media fell in 2009. In this article we are going to discuss book sales. According to a recent report, book sales were off by 1.8 percent in 2009. This is a slight improvement from the 2.6 percent drop in 2008.

Years ago, books were considered recession-proof, since they were an affordable form of entertainment. But that is not the case anymore. Of course, this has more to do with the competition than it does with the actual cost of books, which is not much more than it has ever been, when adjusted for inflation in San Pedro.

However, there are other forms of entertainment that are comparably cheap, often free. We are speaking of course about the internet. As you may know, people can download games, movies and music online for a nominal fee. By comparison, books are quite expensive. Fortunately, there is good news to report. (more...)

The Problems with Fake Reviews for Books

Before buying a book a lot of people will tend to read a review on it. While these can be really helpful if they are written honestly, fake reviews can do a lot of damage.

Publishers all want to make sure that the books they publish get the best reception and do as well as possible. One way for this to happen is for a book to get a lot of favourable reviews from people who have read them.

Unfortunately not all reviews are fair and some people will publish fake reviews on books so that a particular book will not do very well or vice versa. One problem with such reviews is that there is not always very much a publisher can do to stop reviews which are fake from being published. (more...)

Engage with the Classics

In this era of rapidly advancing technology, in which every second person has an ipad2 and more and more of us are doing our reading on an electronic device, books seem like something of an anachronism. However, regardless of how tech savvy you are, the world's great literature still has the capacity to challenge you, and this, it seems, might be a good reason to engage with some of it.

If you are keen to get to grips with some of the great fictions of the last few hundred years but you're not ordinarily much of a reader, you'll find that you may need some direction when it comes to making a book choice. In order to guide you to the right book, it's a good idea to make the effort and visit a library or, failing that, a book shop.

Don't be afraid to ask for assistance, but try to arrive at your chosen literature outlet with a vague idea of what you'd like to read. Consider beforehand whether you're keen on something historical, written sometime in the last couple of centuries, or whether you'd prefer to engage with something a little more contemporary. Buying Rare Books

If you are keen to get into the world of rare and antiquated books, you will want to make sure that you have a few bases covered before you set out. It is important to remember that while it is possible to stumble upon a fantastic find in a charity book shop and sell it for the price of a Nikon Coolpix , this is not a regular occurrence.

Indeed, success in the world of rare and antique book trading is rather more difficult to achieve. Before you embark on a search for first editions and rare copies, you will need to learn a good deal about books, literature and the business of identifying a worthwhile purchase.

In order to do this, you should try to spend as much time as you can working with experts in the field. Visit bookshops, auctions and antiques fairs, and before you actually do any buying of your own, try to glean as much knowledge from the old-hands as is possible. (more...)
